Offenders have to do unpaid work that benefits the local community. This is known as community payback.

The offenders are supervised by specially-trained probation staff who also act as positive role models.

It is suitable for people aged 16 and over whose offence is serious enough to warrant a community sentence.

It may be for a minimum of 40 hours to a maximum of 240 hours. This must be done at a rate of between five and 21 hours a week.

In 2009-10 in Warwickshire it is estimated that 73,070 hours of unpaid work was carried out by offenders.

Nationally, offenders carry out about eight million hours of unpaid work each year in the community.

Examples Of Unpaid Work Projects in Warwickshire

Offenders laid a footpath which villagers had been campaigning about for years. It took 350 offender working days and 2,500 Community Payback hours to to create this safe and pleasant amenity for local villagers. The footpath enables residents of the village to safely walk or cycle to Dunchurch without crossing the busy road.

An individual has been working at a local Nursing home, helping to care for the residents: taking them for walks, helping with meals and has even helped escort residents to a local church service. 1st level Nurses are responsible for monitoring not only the attendance but also the effort and standard of work undertaken.

More recently individual placements have been found for a number of offenders, and various traditional activities have been undertaken: decorating and maintaining the garden and general DIY work. The rear garden which has been tended by offenders and boasts a summer house built by offenders.
